10/02/2000 Hello, it's Monday morning. We had a wonderful weekend at Lake Erie. The weather couldn't have been any better. Not too much wind, that was a welcome change. I think everyone caught fish. We had about 10 Fish Ohio Perch, (13"or over), 3 Fish Ohio Walleyes (over 28"), and 3 Fish Ohio Smallmouth Bass (20" of fighting fury). I heard of some guys that tried to get greedy and got caught with way too many perch. I don't know any of the particulars, but the officers confiscated their boat and tackle until they go to court. They also confiscated their fish. They caught them at Mazuric's State ramp as they were loading up. Once they go to court they will probably loose their fishing licenses for a few years. It's definitely not worth the chance. It would have been better if they would have taken a day off work and went fishing for an other legal limit. A lot cheaper too. The Division of Wildlife DOES NOT want any one to keep more than their limit because I guess we are getting close to our quota of perch with the Lake Erie Consortium. That includes Canada. I guess if we go over our quota for the year that gives the Canadians an excuse to up their netting quota. I told you I would let you know if the walleyes started firing up down at Huron. Well I think it is just starting. Last week, about Tuesday or Wednesday, I heard 3 guys on the radio talking that were fishing down in front of Huron. They said they were about 3 miles out, they were catching pretty good. But they were trolling. The guys that fish down there all the time have been doing that all summer, but these guys were from here in Marblehead. So I started investigating. I also sent a couple of guys down to find out. The one guy didn't go, he stopped off at Marblehead and got his limit in nice perch, and then just came back. The other fellow drifted till noon and got 5 fish, then started to troll and got the rest of his limit with 3 guys. All their fish were 3 lb. and over. They had two 10 lb. walleyes. This week end there were a lot of people that went down to Huron. More fish were caught trolling, than drifting, but some of the drifters did pretty good. The captains that troll all the time and are especially good at it, just killed'em. They either had their limit or were close to it. And all big fish. Looks like we are going to have a good fall season for walleyes just as we predicted. The smallmouth bass are really turned on now too. Soft craws and watermelon tubes are the preferred baits. Stop in when you get here and we will help you all we can. We had bait all week end too. We had lake shiners all weekend, golden shiners, both for perch and bass, & plenty of soft craws. Started selling more night crawlers too. Suppose to be nice tomorrow, rain Wednesday and Thursday, clear up Friday when the front goes through and get cold. Friday a high in the 40's, Saturday & Sunday, high in the 50's. don't know about the wind. Sounds like we could have another good fall fishing weekend. Good fishing & good luck.
09/27/2000 Hello, it's Wednesday afternoon. It seems like the wind has been blowing for 3 weeks. Both the last 2 weekends have been blow outs. I try to guess the wind by watching the weather forecast. But they only predict the wind for one day. The second day they predict the rain, sun shine, clouds, & etc., by the way the front's coming through. But it is hard to predict the wind and that is the one thing that will stop us from fishing. We can fish in a little wind, rain, cold, heat, & etc. But if we have high winds and tall waves it is better to stay on the bank and find something else to do. I try to help you and your planing but it is hard to do with the wind. Yesterday it was windy in the morning, but it calmed down in the afternoon, and some people who were already here, or live here, went perch fishing. It was too late for most people, because they already had started something else by then. The people that went, caught perch. Glen Lapp from Marysville, his mom, and his friend caught 63. They had one Fish Ohio Perch, which was 13" long. Today it is a beautiful day, a little windy, 10 to 20 mph out of the southwest. The wind is suppose to switch and come out of the northeast tonight, and get stronger. Then it is suppose to start to be more stable for the next 4 or 5 days. Should be a better weekend. I guess we should appreciate each day for what it is because there is nothing we can do about it any way. All the fish were biting good before the wind. There are a lot more fishermen out today. maybe I can give you a report tomorrow. We should be back to catching fish by the weekend. See you then. Good fishing, & good luck.
09/22/2000 Hello, it's Friday noon. Thought I should update the weather report for this area. It looks like we are not going to have the rain and wind they predicted earlier. Today it is a beautiful day. The wind was blowing a little this morning, but it has slowed down now. It is blowing about 5 to 10 mph out of the south east now. The report for sat. and sun. now is for a chance of thunderstorms Saturday, but nice for Sunday. It didn't sound like there would be too much wind with the front, but who knows. They did change the report though and it sounds better than it did. There weren't too many fishing yesterday, I did talk to one charter captain that went fishing out between Middle Bass Island, and South Bass Island, beside Ballast Island. He said they anchored and caught bass and perch pretty good. there are quite a few people going out today. Well my lunch is ready, and I don't want to miss that. Good fishing & good luck.
09/21/2000 Hello, it's Thursday morning. Not too much going on here at Lake Erie today. The wind is blowing, and not too many people fishing. It is a nice day, but the wind is blowing about 20 to 25 mph out of the west. The wind is suppose to subside tonight. I haven't been posting as often here lately because I have been devoting all of my time to fighting the township about the zoning for my suites that I rent out. We had our hearing last night and we won! It was a hard battle, and costly, but now we can keep on operating. Now maybe I can concentrate more on the bait and tackle business. The perch have been biting excellent when we can get out. Bass are doing good too. The walleyes are still out west, and the guys still catch them when we have a good walleye day. It has been pretty quiet down east. They always catch a few walleyes east,(Huron & Vermilion area), but some times in the fall they just have a field day down their. If that starts to happen down there I will keep you updated. I guess it is suppose to be nice tomorrow, not as much wind. Saturday and Sunday we are suppose to have rain. I don't know about the wind. The weathermen say 5 to 15 knots all weekend. Good fishing & good luck.
09/16/2000 Hello, it's Saturday afternoon. The wind is starting to die down. It is blowing about 10 to 20 mph out of the northwest now. It is suppose to switch tonight and come out of the southwest tomorrow, at 10 to 15 mph. I have talked to several people that have been out on the lake today, and they said that the waves weren't as high as they thought, but the water was really muddy. There are several people with bigger boats fishing today, and I'll let you know how they do. Most are fishing for bass or perch because they can hide from the wind and do that. I would say that we won't be catching walleyes for a couple of days. The weather looks good for Sunday and Monday. Good fishing & good luck.
09/15/2000 Hello, it's Friday morning. The wind is really blowing today. There wasn't anything in the forecast Tuesday or Wednesday about wind, sorry. I hope this report is in time to save some of you a trip. It is suppose to blow again tomorrow too, only not as bad. It is hard to tell about the wind. It can kick up when it is not suppose to and die when it is suppose to be blowing. We are suppose to have 35 knot winds today, and 15 to 25 out of the north tomorrow. If it is suppose to die down tomorrow it is hard to say how much. It is a nice day today except for the wind. There are a few people going fishing today. They must be going to hide some where behind an island or around the corner from the wind. All the fish in the lake are biting now. Yesterday three of my customers went out and came back with 25 walleyes that weighed 98 lb. at the fish cleaners. I know they caught the fish because I took pictures of them when they got back. They called me on their cell phone on their way back in, and I met them at the dock and took pictures of their fish, and you will be able to see them in our album at the store in the near future. They gave my wife and I a bag of fillets for coming down and taking the pictures and we had some of them for dinner last night. Yum, yum. See you when the wind dies down. Good fishing & good luck.
09/13/2000 Hello, it's Wednesday evening. We had a good day today on Lake Erie. Monday was a good day but there weren't too many people here. Tuesday it blew pretty hard in the morning, then settled down a little in the afternoon. It was still a little rough though. I know of a charter that went out Tuesday walleye fishing and got twenty. They were drift fishing around the reefs. They had some nice fish. They had one that was 27 inches long. Several in the 24 and 25 inch range. They were fishing around Gull Reef and Kelleys Shoal. I guess those walleyes have learned how to catch a gobbie. When the gobbies first came to Lake Erie you never found gobbies inside of walleyes. Now people are finding gobbies inside of them. I guess they are like all other wildlife, they have to learn to adapt to survive. I think all the fish in the lake are eating them now. Maybe that will help keep them under control. We were all worried, when we learned that the gobbie was introduced into Lake Erie from the ballast water of a ocean going ship from Europe. We were worried that they would eventually take over the lake since it was told that they spawn 4 or 5 times a year and most other fish only spawn once a year. I remember when we first started seeing gobbies that some of them were pretty good size. We were saving them in the freezer here at the bait store for a professor of marine biology at Bowling Green University, to study. Some of the first ones brought in by customers were up to 6 to 8 inches long. There are more of them now, but it seems like they are smaller. I'm not a biologist but it seems to me they either aren't getting enough to eat, or they aren't very old. We all hope they don't become a problem. There are also walleyes being caught west of Rattlesnake Island. Those fish have been there all year. When the conditions are right they catch them really good out there. Those fish on the average are not as big as they are around the reefs but they are usually a little easier to catch. The reefs are a little tougher to fish because you have to try not to hit the bottom of the lake with your boat. On the reefs you throw weight forward spinners, like Erie Dearies, Big Johns, etc., and keep them off the bottom so you don't catch the gobbies. Out west in the open water you throw Weapon type harnesses. The perch are still doing excellent. Lots of limits, and nice size too. You know the perch are biting good when the fishermen aren't bitching about the size or the types of minnows we have for them to use. We have had lake shiners most of the time. Most of the time we have both lake shiners and golden shiners, but when we run out of lake shiners, everyone just takes goldies and they don't say too much. Use to be when the perch fishing was tougher, and we ran out of lake shiners, some of the people just wouldn't go fishing. The smallmouth bass are doing well too. Today we had two men who came from Maryland and Pennsylvania to do some smallmouth bass fishing. They are here for several days. They are here to get some stories for the lure company they work for. I'll keep you up to date on how they do, and how they are doing it. I just had an employee tell me that a customer just stopped in the store to get some ice and told him that his crew went out east of Kelleys Island, where we told him to go, and caught his limit of perch, (120). And then went out west of North Bass Island, where we told him to go, and trolled for walleyes and caught 15, today. I'd say those guys had a good day of fishing. Where else in the world can you do that? I rest my case. The weather looks pretty good for the week end. We might get some rain Thursday night or Friday morning, then cool off. We are suppose to have highs in the 60's Friday. But in the 70's by Sunday. Good fishing & good luck.
